This was created by Alex Budovsky from the Figli - Migli Productions. The animation was a stop- motion animation and it featured well created models and the movements of the stop motion was very solid. Overall I would give it a 3 out of 5 because it did not match up to the goodness of stop motion animation and music video category.

An Animated Short (VFS)

An Animated Short

The flick that I have just seen actually has no title. It starts out with a ninja meditating and his shadow is bored, then out of nowhere a ball drops to his side and is trying to distract him. The ninja does not fall for the ball's plot but his shadow did, then the shadow holds the ball and a basketball hoop suddenly emerges from the ground and it starts to play. After awhile the ninja notices that his shadow has left him and he goes out to find it. Then he finds his shadow playing and demands to come back, but the shadow denies him. He tries begging to it but comes to no avail. Just about as he was leaving he notices a lights switch. He then shows the shadow the switch and then turns it off.

The film was created by Hischam Zouorob, a student of the Vancouver Film School. He used what he learned from the animation and visual effects program in his school. The 3D modelling was very well done and the animation was good. Overall I would give it a 3 out of 5 stars for the storyline and animation.

Oktapodi

Oktapodi

The video that I have just seen is entitled "Oktapodi". The film was created by Gobelins studio, and their work is terrific! The animation was so realistic it hardly seemed made up, and the models were so perfectly rendered that it added to the realism. There were no flaws in this film and the story was created so well. The movie is about a boy who has a unicycle for a leg. We first see three of them sitting in a bar quarreling with each other, then three irish men come in arguing about them sitting in their place. Then suddenly Joe chokes from a meatball, and spits it out which hit an irish man and a woman. Then the brawl begins, with the irish guy and the woman fighting each other. Then the black guy tries to shoot another guy who is drinking at the bar, but hits the bartender instead because he was bit by a sheep. After the brawl they ask the bartender for drinks, and is given to them by none other but Joe. After awhile they drag Joe out and tie him to a sheep and then run off into the horizon.

The flick was created by Alan Cook and Philip Rodriguez. The animation and transition of the movie was good and the story was a bit off but did well. Overall this gained a respectable 4 out of 5 stars.

Puppet

Puppet

The film that I have just witnessed is entitled "Puppet". It is a story about a young man who creates a hand puppet that hurts him in increasingly gruesome and bizarre ways. It is a story of desperation, fear, and an ever-present question: does the puppet have a mind of its own, or does the hand want to control it this way?

The animation was created by Patrick Smith back in 2006. We start off by going through the gates of heaven to find a young angel taking a shower. After showering he then grabs a leaf which acts as his clothes. He then walks away from the shower and yawns because it was almost bed time. But suddenly a gust of wind blows away the leaf and he quickly tries to get it back. The leaf lands away from the gates of heaven and the little angel hurries over to get it. But as soon as he puts it back on the gates close, and he is stuck outside heaven. He tries to fly over it but is unsuccessful, and he keeps on trying to use the doorbell but to no avail. When all seemed hopeless, the little angel desperately tries one last time to fly over the gates. And with a little help from God, he is able to fly and go to sleep.

The film was created by Dewi Permata Sari of the Vancouver Film School for her digital character animation course. The animation was very well rendered and the transition of the movie was flawless, but the only downside is that the film had little to no sound effects at all. Overall I would score this film a 4 out of 5 stars for brilliant animation.

Sand Animation

Sand Animation

This time I have watched another sand animation which has no title at all. The stop motion was great and the music was awesome! The pictures were taken in perfect timing and were placed in a manner in which it does not seem to be stop motion (is that possible?). It shows all the seven deadly sins in a kind of morphing matter. The flick was created by Mark Crawford by using sand animation. The film was great because it had very good picture transformation and the transition was very fluid. The only downside was that the models were kind of a blur and we could not clearly see what they were. The film scores 4 out of 5 stars for its animation.

Sand animation (Animals)

Sand animation (Animals)

The short film that I have just viewed is entitled "Sand animation (Animals)". It is a film based on various animals morphing. The movie was created back in the spring of 2005 by Miss Sigrid Astrup. Even though the transformations were not very smooth, it was still a good film. But the downside was the music, which did not go well with the film. Overall I would rate this movie 3 out of 5 stars for the good animation.

Rain

Rain

The film that I have just watched is entitled "Rain". The film starts out with a man lighting a match and then swallows it (is that physically possible?!). Then he blows out the fire from his mouth to light up a candle. He then takes the candle and places it on top of a shelf to illuminate the entire room, he goes over to his table to resume what he was doing. He then starts to carve markings onto a piece of wood. He then brushes the wood shavings off it and places it in a bag with the rest of the items he made. He continued to create similar things til the candle ran out. Then he takes the bag, puts out the candle with his fingers and goes out the door. He poured the items onto a wheel barrow and brings it near a tree where the leaves have all withered. He digs a small hole in the ground and takes one item (which is actually a tombstone) and creates a small grave. Then a leaf that had just fallen from the tree and was picked up by the man and placed into the grave. And in the end it rained and showed a message " it rains because the universe weeps for all the fallen leaves of autumn".

This animation was created by Simon Streatfeild. The applications that he used was Wacom, the animation was very great throughout the film. Because the caricatures were well drawn and the transition of the pictures were flawless. Overall I would give it 4 out of 5 stars because of the excellent animation and good story.

Untitled

Untitled

The film that I have just watched has no name but is a short stop motion animation. This was created minilogue in 2006, the creator is unknown but he used whiteboard for his stop motion so it did not have any retakes. As we can see the film consists of a lot of things ranging from various animals to people. The animation was great because his caricatures were very well drawn and it did not have a lot of flaws. And the transition from one drawing to another was so smooth it felt like it was alive. Overall this stop motion animation gets a 5 out of 5 for its category and for great animation techniques.

Toy Friend

Toy Friend

The flick that I have just viewed is entitled "Toy Friend". We start off in a living room where a disabled child is playing with his toys. Then he throws his alien toy on the floor and heads to the table to free the girl toy from her cage. He then speaks a little dialogue of the superhero and the girl talking, then moves away from the table to pretend that the superhero is flying. As he was playing he was not able to notice the stairs and was about to fall, then suddenly the alien toy comes to life and goes over to the wheel to stop him from falling. Relieved from not falling down, he goes over the stairs and picks up the alien toy. He then brings the toy to the table and pats it on its head, and then picks up the superhero toy and goes away. Then the alien toy sits up and is delighted with itself as the girl toy comes over to show affection to it.

This film was created and animated by Silvio Toledo, a brazilian animator. This flick was great because it brings to life the saying "beauty in simplicity". Even though the story was simple, it was saved by the stunning 3D animation and the sound effects. The models had no flaws in them and their movements were very well created. Overall this animation would receive a 5 out of 5 stars.

Sally

Sally

The film that I have just viewed is called "Sally". The movie begins with Sally walking through the desert. He kept on walking til he found a tree, and when he approached it he saw a juicy red apple. So he decides to try and get it, he then notices a branch that has fallen from the tree beside it. So he picks it up and then goes up a rock and tries to swipe the apple with the branch. But after a few tries he has not yet swiped the apple. In his frustration he throws the stick and just stands on the rock. To his amazement the apple dropped and he was able to eat it. But after one bite, he turned into stone and thus was doomed. He did not notice that there were other people who also ate the apple and turned to stone because of him being too hasty. And in the distant horizon we could see another wanderer heading to the same spot as Sally did.

The animation was created by Hasan Ulukaya. He used 3D as his medium for this short animation. The models were created very well and the setting was also done beautifully. But the only downside of the film was the sound effects. Some sounds did not match the right timing or right moment for it, an example was the voice of Sally and the biting of the apple. But overall I would give it a 3 out of 5 stars for the good story and great animation.

War of the Worlds

War of the Worlds

The film that I had just viewed is named "War of the Worlds". Just like the movie that Tom Cruise starred in, the movie has a similar plot but was set way back in the early 1800's. I will go straight to the point with reviewing this film because this is one of the worst animations I have ever seen so far. The creator said that this animation was created over 5 years ago and that he didn't know how to use 3D max and was his first attempt at an animation. Even with these reason, I would say that he should have really put more effort in his work. The animation was so bad that 2D pictures were way better than this. And that the transition of the frames and the movement of the models were to robotic and it was badly produced. I would give this 2 out of 5 stars, I would have given only 1 but I still considered the plot of the story

Blast Off!

Blast Off!

This film which I just viewed is entitled "Blast Off!", and it as a short summary of what the movie is all about. BlastOff! tells the story of how the worlds of reality and fantasy easily blend together in the fertile imagination of a young child, especially when supplied with creative toys and environments. The story begins at dawn with a child's wishful drawing of a space ship. During the day his father builds him a custom designed space shuttle bed and fills his room with toys. As the sun sets, one of the child's toys, a little green alien, comes to life and is excited pretending to pilot the space ship. As his imagination soon takes over completely, the room fades away and the shuttle bed blasts the little alien out into space for a wild rocket ship ride through the rings of Saturn. The alien finally comes crashing back to reality as the child returns home to find his room is a complete mess.

The animation was created by Michael Scaramozzino and his custom design of the space shuttle bed used in the film. This animation has won multiple awards and screened as an official selection in multiple film festivals. This animation is so good that it made me realize how incredible and powerful 3D films are. The models of every element in the movie was well designed and very well rendered to make it look so realistic. And to top if off the story was indeed a simple yet very interesting creation. With these, I have given it 5 out of 5 stars and a rare two- thumbs up to Michael for a job very well done.

SOLO

SOLO

This film is entitled "SOLO". It is about an old man who loves to take photographs. We see him taking random pictures such as a lamp post, birds, a dog, and even an old lady. But his actual reason for doing this was to create his own world using the shots he got. For awhile it seemed great for him, he was having a romantic dinner in his makeshift studio. But alas, the cardboard cut out of the old lady started to fall down and got burned a bit by the candle light. He tried to resume his dinner but it didn't feel any real, and because of this he cried. But suddenly the cardboard lady comes alive! She reaches out to the old man to comfort him. Then he becomes cardboard and everything around them also comes alive. The old man has finally become happy.

The animation was created by Master Internacional De Animacion Audiovisual and was directed by Ricardo Moyano, Maria Calatayud and Ysabel Castro in 2002. The movie was very touching and it was very good because the animation was excellent. The transition of frames was flawless and there wasn't a single miscalculation in the sound effects. The company utilized both 2D and 3D graphics which made it a top- notch film. Overall I would rate it 5 out of 5 stars because of the great plot and amazing animation.

The Real Survivor

The Real Survivor

The film that I have just viewed is entitled "The Real Survivor". It starts out in the middle of nowhere where we find a boy stranded on a sand bar with nothing else except some coconuts. After awhile he sees a big cola dispenser floating towards him. He was so happy that he was able to carry it onto the sand bar so he could get some cola. Lucky for him that there was a last can of soda pop inside the dispenser, so he placed his $1 coin into the slot to be able to obtain the cola. But it soon spits back out the coin, and he tries it again and again. After several tries he got so frustrated that he started to try and take the cola by force, but was still not able to. After a few moments he found that the dispenser had a cable in which it needed to be plugged in to work. But as he was about to lose hope the dispenser opened up and dropped down the cola. The boy was so happy that he jumped and danced to his delight from the triumph he had. But then, when he opened the can it spew out its contents thus leaving the boy with an empty can. Angered, he crushed the can and threw it and the dispenser back into the ocean.

This film was created by Eduardo Vieira. The quality of the animation was excellent because it used 3D graphics instead of the common 2D design. And the story was good for a short film. Overall this film would get 4 out of 5 stars in both animation and story.

Juxtaposer

Juxtaposer

The film that I have viewed for today is called "Juxtaposer". From the title itself we can picture what the film might be. The word Juxtapose is to place side by side or to compare each other. In this short film we see a woman sitting in the park alone, reading the daily newspaper. When out of nowhere a cat comes and jumps on her lap. The cat sniffs her for a bit and then growls at her, then the cat jumps beside her to lie and sleep. After a few moments a group of teenagers pass by doing "pasa mano" and the like. She tries to copy it but gets punched in the nose. Then a pair of stylish best friends pass by her, acting all so lady-like. She also tries to be like them by rolling her jeans up to create fake "pedals" but to no avail. Then a child passes by and seems to be lost. As she was about to try and comfort the child, his mother came and picked him up. Then out of nowhere comes a stranger who speaks of dazzling words and weird rhymes. It seemed that this person was a hopeless romatic who was trying to write a poem, then comes his girl friend and they kiss in front of the lady. After thinking for a bit she decides to be herself and picks up the cat and starts brushing it. She kept on brushing the cat until she was loved by it.

This animation was created by Joanna Davidovich in 2005. Her animation was pretty good despite the fact of average drawings and the lack of realism in her film. She didn't dwell too much on the sketches too much but concerned herself more on the plot of the movie. Overall the animation and story was excellent and would be rated four out of five stars.

Devil

Devil

The last animation that I watched for this week is entitled "Devil". The story starts somewhere in heaven, we can see a little devil flying up and reaching St. Peter's Gates. But as he touches the gates an alarm goes off, so he tries to look for a way to get in. Just then, a soul comes to the gates of heaven and the devil is forced to hide. As he was watching, the devil found out the way to enter into heaven's gates without tripping off the alarm. So he comes back wearing a fake halo around his head and bows down before the gates. It opens and he quickly enters it, after a few seconds he went it he quickly wrecks havoc and dismay in heaven. And is then kicked out once again for his devilish deeds.

The animation was created by Chris Magovern for his final project in Ex'pression College for Digital Arts in May of 2004. Even though the story was very simple, the visuals and animation was stunning. He had created such a masterpiece that involved very complex animation using 3D graphics. The little devil and the soul were created perfectly and the rendering was great. The animation was also very good because it didn't have any jumps or any errors. This is one of the best animations I have seen so far. I would give it 5 out of 5 stars.

The Season

The Season

This animation is named "The Season". From the title alone we can already know what it is about. But because of the great skill the writers of this short animation had, they were able to turn it into a great film. The film start in late fall, where a tree stands and the leaves were starting to wither and die. We can see that the leaves, nuts, etc. had lives and were happy. After a few seconds we can see that beside a leaf, there was crawling a hungry caterpillar who had its eyes on the leaf. Lucky for the leaf that the nut had seen the caterpillar and shook the branch so that the caterpillar would fall down. And we could see that the nut was madly in love with the leaf. Then after a few days had past, almost all the leaves had fallen to the ground except for the last leaf and the nut. Then suddenly came a strong gust of wind and it tore the leaf from the branch and started to fall. Because of this the nut also shook and fell along with it. And when they fell onto the ground the leaf then wrapped aroung the nut to protect it from the snow. And when spring came, the nut had began to grow and would eventually become a tree.

The film was created by B Entertainment Animation Studios in 2005. The animation was not the excellent because we can clearly see the rough movements of the drawings and some errors in the film. But because the story of the film which was written by William Sikora III and Josh Echavarria, it turned out to be one great film.

Fridges

Fridges

This short film that I have viewed is entitled "Fridges". This was created by a Japanese independent animator named Fujio Tanabe. The story is about a busted up fridge who was dumped because it was of no use anymore but still wanted to be used again despite its inferiority. It tried desperately to be accepted by another but to no avail. When all seemed hopeless, a young woman carrying a lot of groceries came and stopped it from killing itself. She then brought it home with her and tried to fix it, after awhile she was able to fix the fridge. Because she had a bigger and working fridge now, she threw out her old and petite fridge. After serving its new found owner, the fridge was bothered by how she treated her old fridge. And because it felt the same feeling the fridge went after the owner's old fridge to try and persuade it to come back.

Fujio is a very good animator because he utilized 3D effects in his animation. The characters in his film were very much 3D modeled and were perfectly rendered to show no flaws. The only backdrop of his film was the fading/cutting of scenes in which he didn't get it right. Overall this animation would get 4 out of 5 stars for its good quality and storyline.

Geri's Game

Geri's Game

This short animated film that I have seen was created back in 1997 by the animation studio Pixar. The film starts in a park, Geri goes to a table and places a chessboard and he begins to set up a game of chess. It was already clear that he was the only one in the park that day but still decides to finish placing the pieces on the board. After awhile he takes a pair of glasses from his jacket and makes the first move to start the game, then he took the glasses off stood up to go to the other side to make a move. Then after a few seconds it seemed that he was battling another person, his own self! Every move he made was countered by his enemy until the only remaining piece he had was his king. Unsure what to do he faked a heart attack to try and distract his opponent. And it worked! When his opponent was trying to check on him if he was all right he flipped the board to make it look like he was winning. And when his opponent saw the board he didn't notice that Geri changed the board because he forgot what color he was. And so Geri's opponent lost and gave up a prize, his false teeth.

This film was so great that it was able to win the 1997 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. Pixar has produced great animated movies such as Toy Story (1995), A Bugs Life (1998), Toy Story 2 (1999), Monsters, Inc. All of these movies have won numerous awards for animation and they are still coming up with even more films with even better animations. They have been breaking grounds of animation with the projects they have come up with. And this short film is one of them, taking a simple game of chess and turning it into a masterpiece of art and film. Pixar always provides the public with high quality movies that is sure to be enjoyed by everyone.

Kiwi!

Kiwi!

The short film that I have seen was entitled Kiwi!. The flick was about a kiwi bird who really wanted to fly but could not do it because all kiwi birds are flightless ones. Yet despite this, he found a way to fly because of his determination and creativeness. He climbed a really tall tree and started to bring up smaller ones on its side and nailed them to it, thus creating a fake forest. After completing this daunting task he then put on his pilot's helmet and jumped. As he was falling it looked like he was flying because of the forest that he nailed on the side of the giant tree. And for the first time in his life he was able to experience something that no other kiwi would ever experience, the ability to fly. Because of the overwhelming joy he was experiencing, he was able to cry a bit and then plunged into the abyss.

This short film was created by Doni Permedi for his Master's Thesis Animation. And because this animation was so popular it was able to win the "Best CG" award at the Channel Federator Awards. He created this using Maya and After Effects. The animation was very good because it didn't have any errors in the 3D creation of the model and that the flow of the film was flawless. The camera angles and the shots were excellent and the time in which he moved in for an extreme close up to see the tear from the kiwi was great.

Jack & Bill

We were taught how to use the program "Adobe Premier" in our film making class. This program helps the user edit shots and sequences of a movie to his/her liking. Then we were grouped accordingly to create our very own short films. Movie making is not as easy as it looks, we had a hard time thinking of a plot and how would the story end. But after a hard time brainstorming, we were finally ready to shoot the flick. We were given the plot of Jack & Jill to work on, and the good thing was we could modify it to our ideas. We modified it by not using the traditional guy & gal theme, but we used the 2 guys theme and in the present times. Our story starts of in a building, where a guy (played by Ryann Juaton) was loitering in a corridor eating a banana. As a lot of people would do he just threw the banana peel on the floor. Then we cut to the ground floor of the building where our two guys (Jack & Bill as I named them) was going to there class after playing a round of basketball. After a few moments of climbing a flight of stairs, Bill (played by Christoferd Alvarez) slipped on the banana peel that was thrown earlier and hit Jack (played by Errl VIllapando). Thus the two of them fell down the stairs in a horrific sight.

Our production team consisted of The Directors (Niño Mogato & Edmund Baños), The Actors (Ryann Juaton, Christoferd Alvarez & Errl Villapando), and The Storyboard Editors (Joanne Atilano, Jojie Vildosola & Vanli Oliveros). I learned that as a co-director it is essential to capture the right light for the scene, the movement of the actors and camera and the camera angles. I also realized that if everyone would pitch in when creating the film, then it would most likely have shorted takes and better output than working alone or by pair.

Basic Directing Workshop

We were told that we would attend a two day seminar in which it would provide us and other students and faculty members the basics of film making and movie directing. This seminar was held in the Ateneo AVC room (Audio Visual Center). The seminar was given by documentary filmmaker Gutierez Mangansakan II. On the first day of the seminar he explained to us how hard it was to create a film back then because of the small resources that they would be given. He said that when he was still in college, the 10 minute roll of film would cost around 10,000 php. And that they would not use all of the 10 minutes, but only 3 minutes! So basically if you would do a 30 minute film back then (30 x 10,000= 300,000). Its just like buying a car for the first time. And he also spoke about what kind of shots would be best for a sequence, what angles would bring out the emotion of the scene and more.

Then on the second day of the seminar he taught us the essential things for a great film like cinematography, music, audio and the like. He also taught us how to create storyboards and how to utilize our new found knowledge by creating a sequence of shots from a short part of the story "The flight of Icarus". Our story was the second best out of the five groups because of the shot selections and the camera angles. I am very happy that this seminar taught me very useful bits of information about directing and film making. I hope that I would have the opportunity to enhance my knowledge and increase it further. Thank you Mr. Mangansakan!

Blogging 101 Seminar

It is a very sad thing that I was not able to attend the entire blogging seminar due to constant meetings for the campaigning of UNIDO (the party that I am running in). After all the stuff we did and the topics we discussed I was able to catch a mere fraction of the seminar. Even though I was late (more like 20 minutes left kinda late) I still got some good tips from Sir Rye.

I found out that whenever you blog, sometimes it generates cash (for real!), I still haven't acquired any money from blogging yet but I am now sure enough to try and blog more often. And I am glad that I am taught blogging because I could say anything I want without being told whether it is right or wrong, just like a personal journal.

Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI)

Computer-assisted instruction makes use of multimedia software in the learning process including text, video technology, graphics, sound, and Internet technology. Computer-assisted instruction is heavily used in the growing field of distance education. Traditionally, computer-assisted instruction, like programmed instruction, has been linear in nature. Web based instruction on the other hand is nonlinear. Instruction using Internet protocol makes use of technological features that traditional computer-assisted education does not, such as hyperlinking, synchronous and asynchronous conferencing, real-time audio and video, as well as 3-D virtual reality.

There are numerous unique features of CAI which make it an exciting field. One of the most useful is its adaptability for distance learning. Before the dominance of microcomputers, distance learning was mostly accomplished through PI or the US mail system supplemented by telephone contact. On the contrary, CAI provides regular and timely interaction with the instructor and current feedback. Students can repeat tutorials as often as needed and work at their own pace. CAI also can be used with greater numbers of students than a traditional classroom would hold. CAI and web-based instruction have opened avenues of access to individuals with disabilities that were not possible before.

Intelligent computer-assisted instruction (ICAI) is programmed so that the CAI adapts to the student's individual needs. It acquires information about the student's current knowledge of a subject and his/her goals in learning the subject and then creates a user profile based on this knowledge. It can then adjust itself to the individual student.

Web-based instruction is unique in that students and/or instructors can communicate with each other anywhere in the world within seconds via the Internet. Feedback from the instructor can be obtained immediately.
Many of the advantages of PI are also advantages of CAI and web-based learning. The advantages of CAI include flexibility for students so that they can work at their own speed at the time that is best for them. With web-based instruction, they can work at home, at school, or anywhere there is a computer with an Internet connection. Used with distance learning, it allows students with handicaps or learning disabilities the opportunity to learn in a less restrictive environment. Also, students who enroll in courses via CAI, including web-based classes, gain an opportunity to learn computer skills, which benefit them in many aspects of their lives.

Photography

Music lover

This picture is a picture of my friend Niño Mogato.
